Rain gardens quite simply are designed to keep the rain water from your property ON your property. The concept is simple. The less water running off your property into the storm sewer means the less water the sewer treatment plant has to treat. In some cases when the treatment plant is over capacity, the extra water is channeled into rivers or other bodies of water. With more and more homes being built it is becoming imperative to capture rain water and let it filter into the soil naturally. Rain gardens are low spots in the yard designed with plantings that like “wet feet”, that is like to be in wetter areas. A proper rain garden has a subsystem below the plantings to help facilitate the percolation of water into the soil. Many times a combination of a permeable paver driveway and rain gardens with rain barrels can virtually eliminate rain water runoff for your property.
