This backyard had a steep hill and when it rains all the water runs off toward the house. We cut the hill down into tiers separated by stacked PA fieldstone retaining walls. We planted some shrubs and plants and mulched the areas. We built a stacked stone fire pit into the lower retaining wall and a staircase, using large PA steppers, leading from the lower patio and yard to the top yard which serves as a nice grassy area for the kids and dog to play. Next to the house we installed a PA Natural Clef Flagstone patio for enjoying, grilling, and entertaining. For extra drainage we installed drain boxes under the lower retaining wall where it meets the patio. These boxes, all connected by a pipe, catch water from the patio and hill and direct it to an area away from the house and patio to drain. Lastly, we regarded the yard and installed all new sod.
